Climate neutrality: Is the climate neutral label dead?

Under this title, our partners Uwe M. Erling and Dr. Martin Schorn have highlighted the pitfalls of climate communication in an article for the special edition of the PR-Magazin (issues 12/23 and 1/24). Statements in connection with voluntary offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions are particularly risky – as shown by the scandals surrounding worthless CO2 certificates uncovered by international media in 2023. From an ESG compliance perspective, companies would do well for the time being to exercise restraint when making advertising claims about climate neutrality or at least voluntarily comply with the strict requirements of future regulation under the EU Green Claims Directive presented by the EU Commission in March 2023 and amendments to EU consumer protection law.
